New born Zebu with weak front legs I am sure we have all had this at one time or another, for those that are starting out or just being this is something to be address right away. After years of raising Zebu we have taken these calves with weak joints, which come from pulling to hard or sometimes the positioning in the cow. It is fixed rather easy with 1.5 inch PVC cut into lengths about 8 inches long and then cut in half the long way. Then take good old duck tape and wrap the ends go around about four times to make a padding top and bottom. Then place the brace on the calf's leg opposite the bow most times on the front of the legs just above the hoof line and then up at the shoulder, ( be careful not to get them to tight just kind of snug and leave them on for about five days to a week. Then take them off and keep them in an area where they don't have a lot of room to run until the leg gets stronger after the legs looks better give them more room. This has really worked great for us and we have passed this on to other breeders with great success. Hopefully this helps someone out if you have any questions feel free to email me or call. Also I have visited with the vet and they recommend a shot of vitamin AD&E. Good luck Lorin

WOW, I have fortunately never had this problem (yet), but I would have had no idea how to take care of it.
Thank you so much Lorin for sharing this suggestion. I will print this off and keep it on file so that I'll know what to do if I ever run into a similar problem.
What a blessing it is to be able to learn success strategies from some of the nation's top breeders. I really like this forum.

I had a bull calf a few years ago that had his knees bent the wrong way. They were real bad. He walked on the back side of his knees. I talked to my vet about using braces. He said that the tendons needed to strengthen themselves, and not to use the braces. The calf got some what better with his legs. They got to be about 80 - 90% normal. I named him Freezer, and put him on full feed of corn. When he was 1 1/2 years old I had him butchered. The meat is good. If I get another, I will try the vitamin AD&E.

Yeah, I've had a couple of goats with such problems, but not since using Pat Coleby's mineral lick. it's late and I'm too tired to look it up, but it is a symptom of a nutritional deficiency, and I'd much rather treat the cause than the symptom. One can get Pat's book, Natural Cattle Care at AcresUSA.com. She's saved me a fortune in vet bills.

I've had several calves with weak front legs over the years. They have all gotten over it on their own without braces, although it certainly looks painful watching them walk. Several were too weak to nurse and we had to bottle feed them. The problem lies in the muscles and tendons and it seems to me that the braces would be counter-productive to strengthening them. However, if it worked for you, Lorrin, it may be something to try. I always give Vitamin A & D, Vitamin B Complex to weak calves. It is a good idea to give 1 cc of selenium to weak calves in some areas of the country, but check with your vet first. Good luck. Rick www.boglefarms.net

My bull was born with one crooked (knock kneed) leg, but the leg went straight on its own within a few weeks. A year later his full brother was born and he also had crooked legs. Actually, both his knees were bent forward and looked horrible, but in a few weeks his legs gradually went straight on their own as well. Today both bulls are sound and with perfect legs.
I've talked with other Zebu owners who have experienced the same thing with most of their calves.
So apparently, this "crooked leg syndrome" is a common occurrence with newborn Zebu calves, and usually resolves itself. So I would talk with a vet first before taking matters in your own hands and putting braces on their legs.
